2017 was probably the first year in which a Disney Pixar film has not only failed to make my top ten films of the year, but failed even to break the top three animated features. Cars 3 , the third in Pixar's black sheep trilogy, was pretty poor by Pixar's standards and rendered that particularly sub-franchise barren. With Hollywood constantly prowling for the next franchise, it is surprising that Denzel Washington - one of the most enduring actors of our time - is only now starring in his very first sequel. The marketing for François Ozon's Summer of '85 ( Été 85 ) has not shied away from its comparisons with Luca Guadagnino's Oscar-winning success Call Me By Your Name . It was only when drafting a list of my personal top hundred films of the decade that I realised something that should've clicked much sooner: Paul Feig is, quite comfortably, one of my favourite working directors today. The American multi-talent has delivered a steady stream of comedy gems over the last decade, notching seven features to date with its eighth on the way. Without meaning to sound facetious, horror is perhaps the hardest genre to mess up. While this isn't to suggest that it is at all easy to make a good genre flick, the general emotions that need to be elected from audiences of the genre - those stemming from fear - are perhaps the easiest to manipulate and exploit, particularly in a theatrical setting where audiences expectations are already primed for scaring. So, riddle me why the genre so frequently misses? The Unnecessary sequel Don't Breathe 2 from Rodo Sayagues is one of the worst culprits in a long time. Poorly conceptualised from the offset, the 'eight years later' set sequel seeks to humanise its antagonist in an attempt to absolve him of his criminal actions, an immediate moral red flag the film never recovers from. After stumbling so dreadfully out of the gate, what follows is a half-baked, nonsensical human transplant plot that plays out as equal parts Rambo: Last Blood, Eastenders and Jeremy Kyle, and make

Where do you start with a movie like Suspiria ? I have neither the intellectual capacity nor the horror expertise to begin dissecting Luca Guadagnino's take on Dario Argento's 1977 film of the same name; neither a reboot nor a sequel, the Call Me By Your Name director's interpretation of the supernatural horror classic is an entity of its own, a wholly undefinable beast unleashed onto the world to predictably polarised reception and divisive reactions. With Hollywood firmly in its "requel" era - when popular films are rebooted as a direct sequel to the original, often featuring legacy characters and fan-favourite elements that made the original such a success - the horror genre is particularly golden ground to mine.
