Big Boys (BFI Flare 2023) (Review)

Playing as part of the 2023 edition of the BFI Flare, Big Boys marks the feature directorial debut of Corey Sherman, who confidently brings this personal coming-of-age tale to the screen. A thoughtful and endearing exploration of sexuality and body confidence, presented through a rarely-seen lens and imbued with both insight and sensitivity, Big Boys is likely to strike a chord with anyone familiar with those unrequited childhood crushes - queer or otherwise.

While initially dubious about the presence of his cousin's new boyfriend on a family camping trip, Jamie becomes increasingly smitten by the new addition to the group and begins to experience new emotions that will lead to personal developments. Keen to explore a myriad of themes but never complicating an otherwise straightforward story of discovery and self-acceptance, Big Boys never bites off more than it (and others may be tempted into thinking it) can chew - and it is a far more well-rounded piece of cinema.

Mining most of its comedy from the awkwardness of adolescence, there is a sense that the experience is one that has been lived in, a well-observed and thoughtfully-executed screenplay grounded in reality. A tonally light if emotionally succinct addition to the queer silver screen canon, Big Boys may not be a particularly hilarious endeavour but the general affability of its cast - lead superbly by Isaac Krasner, who shoulders much of the emotional responsibility of the film - really helps reinforce the mood of the piece.

Body image within the gay community is an issue at best under-discussed and at worst completely ignored, making Big Boys refreshing outlook on it a complete tonic; married to the sensitivity of the coming-of-age story being told in conjunction, we are bestowed an incredibly solid film. Both on the writing and directing duties, Sherman has crafted a universal tale that will profoundly resonate with audiences of all ages, backgrounds, sexualities and experiences while simultaneously remaining true to our lead character's personal story. Ladies and gentlemen, this is an exciting new talent to keep an eye out for.
