2017 was probably the first year in which a Disney Pixar film has not only failed to make my top ten films of the year, but failed even to break the top three animated features. Cars 3 , the third in Pixar's black sheep trilogy, was pretty poor by Pixar's standards and rendered that particularly sub-franchise barren. Melissa McCarthy's Comedy Film Ranking

Melissa McCarthy is probably my favourite comedy actor/actress in the industry; everything from her timing to her improv is very often absolutely hilarious and never short of a small chuckle - whatever film I have seen her in, the laughs come quick and fast, and even on the occasion where her full potential isn't quite met, I'm still happy to watch her give it her all for her performances. In prepration for Ghostbusters, which I hope to watch and review over the weekend, I've rewatched McCarthy's six latest big studio releases and attempted to rank them with some coherency and logic, based on how enjoyable, funny and memorable they are. The Party (2017) (Review)

I knew nothing about The Party. As a matter of fact, it was a last minute addition to my film schedule for the day, if only to pad out the afternoon somewhat. I had not even seen a trailer or poster, only a single still of Timothy Spall when checking the cinema's listings. There's a lot to be said about approaching something as blindly as possible, particularly in the typically marketing-saturated cinematic environment we live in; The Party is a film that truly benefits from that conceit, crafting an endlessly-joyful, consistently-sharp surprise. The Party concerns itself with a dinner party between friends, hosted by Janet, the new shadow minister of health for the opposition party, which descends into an ensuing comedy of tragic proportions (as the poster so elegantly puts) with each successive revelation and tribulation. Baywatch (2017) (Review)

Baywatch was either going to be balls-to-the-wall fun, similar to the rebooted Jump Street film franchise with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, or an absolute disaster. Critics (and most audiences, believe it or not Mr Johnson) called time of death pretty early on, with the action-comedy emerging with savage reviews, ripping the film apart and likely contributing to its lacklustre opening weekend. What could have represented a bright spot in the summer blockbuster window became overcast fairy quickly, with the sequel explicitly referenced at the end of this film placed in severe jeopardy. Finding Dory (3D) (2016) (Review)

On the search for Nemo back in 2003, one loveable, amnesiac yet unforgettable sidekick captured audience's hearts. 13 years later, she managed to find herself in a sequel, Finding Dory, this time taking the starring role. Of course, the picture is the seventeenth in Disney Pixar's filmography (a studio renown for its quality - check out my ranking of every Pixar film here ), and everyone's hopes were incredibly high for the sequel as Nemo remains one of the highest-grossing films in the studio's history, along with it being the highest selling DVD, ever, worldwide. Pixar have experienced both ends of the 'sequel success' rating, but is Finding Dory closer in quality to Toy Story 2 or Cars 2? Beautiful Boy (London Film Festival) (2019) (Review)

Beautiful Boy is seemingly tailor-made for award season: a weepy, real-life drama about a family struggling with the meth addiction of one, adapted from the biographies of the father and son at the heart of the story. Directed by Felix van Groeningen and starring Steve Carell alongside Hollywood's new 'it' boy, Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy digs deep to deliver a tender and sympathetic exploration of the effects of drug addiction on not only the individual but their wider families - but it lacks a strong artistic voice to reach the peak of its potential. Beautiful Boy chronicles the meth addiction and recovery of Nic Sheff ( Chalamet ), told through the eyes of his father David ( Carell ), as he tries to work out how best to handle the situation and support his son throughout his rises and relapse. That Christmas (London Film Festival 2024) (Review)

From writer Richard Curtis and Simon Otto in his directorial debut (although armed with more than a dozen credits as an animator on various projects from the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy to Over The Hedge ) comes That Christmas , this year's animated shot at festive cheer, it would appear. Featuring the voice work of Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker , Bill Nighy and more, That Christmas follows the tales of various residents of a small town whose expectations for December 25th are influenced by love, family and loneliness. Landing as a somewhat surprisingly younger-skewing animated effort than expected, That Christmas is a passably enjoyable effort likely to appease those yet to reach double digits but unlikely to overly impress anyone beyond that.
