2017 was probably the first year in which a Disney Pixar film has not only failed to make my top ten films of the year, but failed even to break the top three animated features. Cars 3 , the third in Pixar's black sheep trilogy, was pretty poor by Pixar's standards and rendered that particularly sub-franchise barren. Melissa McCarthy's Comedy Film Ranking

Melissa McCarthy is probably my favourite comedy actor/actress in the industry; everything from her timing to her improv is very often absolutely hilarious and never short of a small chuckle - whatever film I have seen her in, the laughs come quick and fast, and even on the occasion where her full potential isn't quite met, I'm still happy to watch her give it her all for her performances. In prepration for Ghostbusters, which I hope to watch and review over the weekend, I've rewatched McCarthy's six latest big studio releases and attempted to rank them with some coherency and logic, based on how enjoyable, funny and memorable they are. The Party (2017) (Review)

I knew nothing about The Party. As a matter of fact, it was a last minute addition to my film schedule for the day, if only to pad out the afternoon somewhat. I had not even seen a trailer or poster, only a single still of Timothy Spall when checking the cinema's listings. There's a lot to be said about approaching something as blindly as possible, particularly in the typically marketing-saturated cinematic environment we live in; The Party is a film that truly benefits from that conceit, crafting an endlessly-joyful, consistently-sharp surprise. A frequent topic of conversation within film circles is the worthiness of a film, not only as to whether any given feature deserves the audience’s time, attention and energy, but whether or not it warrants a cinematic exploration. It’s often a politically charged conversation that considers who the film is being made for, whose voices such a platform amplifies, and what it is attempting to say. Baywatch (2017) (Review)

Baywatch was either going to be balls-to-the-wall fun, similar to the rebooted Jump Street film franchise with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill, or an absolute disaster. Critics (and most audiences, believe it or not Mr Johnson) called time of death pretty early on, with the action-comedy emerging with savage reviews, ripping the film apart and likely contributing to its lacklustre opening weekend. What could have represented a bright spot in the summer blockbuster window became overcast fairy quickly, with the sequel explicitly referenced at the end of this film placed in severe jeopardy. Shouldering the privilege of closing the 2023 edition of London Film Festival with their directorial debut no less, Daniel Kaluuya & Kibwe Tavares cook up The Kitchen , a near-future dystopian drama dealing with social class divisions. With Kane Robinson and Jedaiah Bannerman leading from the charge, The Kitchen explores a time when all forms of social housing are eradicated, leaving only The Kitchen: a community that refuses to move away from the place they call home. Desperately seeking a way out, Izi meets Benji, a young kid processing the loss of his mother. As a relationship begins to forge, they must overcome the system stacked against them if they want to survive it. Writer-director Andrew Haigh returns to the silver screen with All of Us Strangers , a loose adaptation of Taichi Yamada's Strangers. When the lonely Adam meets a mysterious stranger, Harry, who lives in the same empty block of flats, he finds himself propelled towards a romance he never saw possible for himself. This chance encounter comes as Adam finds himself revisiting his family, who died when he was a young boy. Andrew Scott leads with the supporting cast rounded out by Paul Mescal, Claire Foy and Jamie Bell .
